Somerset Newborn Photography – An in-home newborn session.

“An investment you will never regret!!  Those first few weeks of your baby arriving into the world are such an emotional time and a huge adjustment to your life that it just flys by in a heartbeat. Having these newborn photos allows us to look back and soak it all up again and again. Mel’s style is why we booked her. Trust me when I say a lot of research went into finding the right newborn photographer for us, and we are so glad we found Mel. We are in love with our images. Highly recommended to anybody who is considering capturing those precious first moments. Thank you, Mel x” – Stacey

  • Three times the love

    Three times the love

Cornwall & Devon Newborn Photographer – Melanie Grace

I was touched when Victoria reached out and asked me to photograph their newest arrival. I had already photographed her family of boys several times before, so I couldn’t wait to catch up with them all to document one of the first special days with their brand new baby GIRL!

Welcome, baby Darcey! From two to three, it’s certainly a journey. Three times the sleepless nights, the wild and the crazy, but also three times the love and cuddles. A favourite moment from my time with these guys was the big boys snuggling their baby sister. These really are the best, most special days.

  • The story of you

    The story of you

Newborn Photography Guide – Devon & Cornwall Photographer

There’s so much anticipation and wonder when you’re expecting a new arrival. It often means baby showers, plans all of the new baby things and everything else you can think of to be ready for this impending new life. Photographs may not be at the top of your list. If you’re like me, you are so focused on everything leading up to birth you don’t really think about the after. Once the baby arrives, you’ll be enjoying that fleeting bubble of time where everything is totally changed but feels completely normal at the same time. The thoughts about getting ready for baby are now replaced with more thoughts, “is baby feeding enough?”, “What time is the midwife appointment?” “am I doing a good job?” It’s so easy to see why documenting moments with photography slips further down the list.

If you’re pregnant and thinking about booking a newborn session, bump it right to the top of your to do list!

Read on for my top tips on things to consider before booking a newborn photographer:

TIP 1 : Choosing your Photographer:

Finding the right photographer for you can take a little while. A newborn session is such a personal experience; you must connect with your photographer and love their style. Newborn photography is similar to Wedding photography in a way because you can’t really go back and re-shoot if you’re unhappy with your photographs.

When to book your newborn Photography Session:

I recommend booking your session whilst you are still pregnant after your 20-week scan is perfect. Then you can relax knowing that it’s all taken care of.

Choosing an In home or studio session?

Studio newborn photography and in-home newborn photography are the most common types on offer at the moment. Studio photography tends to involve more set posing of your baby on their own and perhaps some with you too. In-home sessions are usually ‘lifestyle’ or documentary style and include a mix of images to tell your family’s story. The photographer will come to your home and will likely seek out the areas of your home with the prettiest light. For a studio session, you may need to consider travelling time to the session. Plus packing everything you need. If you have older children, it’s a good idea to take some things to keep them occupied if they’re able to stay with you.

Worried your house isn’t ‘Pinterest worthy’ enough?

Your house doesn’t need to be “perfect”; the love you share is more important and the focus of the photographs. Personally, I love “lived-in” homes; I want to see the bits and pieces that make up your everyday favourite toys, dummies, blankets; leave them; they are important! When preparing your home for your session, the balance must be right for you; if you’re happy, your photographer will be happy.  I love a messy bed with a family cuddled up in it and kids room with their very favourite toys scattered around it. I specialise in honest photography, and your home should reflect that.

What age is the best time to photograph baby?

Different photographers will have different preferences for the ideal age they like babies to be. I personally like to give your family a full 7 days to settle and heal before I arrive for the shoot. It also depends on what you envision for your session; what would you like to capture?
If you want sleepy newborn photos, then 6-12 days is ideal to book your session. Or If you want more interactive photos with your babe’s personality shining, then any time up until 12 weeks is great for a newborn session. You’ll have no idea how you’ll feel after the birth of your baby, which is another good reason to book in during your pregnancy; if it’s all booked in, you’ll have something to focus on. If you leave it until after your baby arrives, you might keep putting it off until you feel a little more together and miss that crucial newborn window.

What is the photographers availability like?  What happens if your baby comes early or late?

Most newborn photographers, myself included, will book your session based on your due date and allow time in their schedule to accommodate an early or late arrival. All you’ll need to do is give me a call/email once the baby has arrived, and we’ll schedule the actual date of your session. There is no shortage of newborn photographers to choose from, but having found one whose style you love only to find out they are fully booked for three months after your baby’s arrival would be disappointing, so make sure you get in there early.

Do you know the full costs in advance?

When I buy something, I like to know the full cost before I make a decision. And I’m sure you do too. Every photographer does things a little differently, so make sure you ask for a full price list and find out exactly what is included before booking to avoid any surprises down the line.

A newborn session means so much more than just ‘having’ photos of this time in your family’s life; researching to find the best Photographer for you is key. So you have photographs to share with your babies for the rest of their lives.

    Welcoming Ottilie

    Lifestyle newborn Photographer Plymouth

This session is special, do you see why? I blogged about these guys a couple of weeks ago; they are the family from the birth story. Welcome, baby Ottilie; it was incredibly special to watch you come into the world. And equally as lovely to witness how adored you are.

Theres nothing more fulfilling than creating photographs that really mean something. Capturing genuine moments and real emotions. Moments that will soon turn into fuzzy memories of a this time that you can’t ever get back. No plans, no poses, no scripts…just real moments of you all-together.

Trust me when I say that you will love looking back at the beginning of this new chapter in your lives. From a family of 3 to four. And one day, your baby will be big enough to look through these moments with you, the very beginning of their childhood. My newborn sessions are more than just photos, so much more. Thank you, Robyn & Marc, for inviting me into your world and trusting me to capture your journey from birth to baby.

  • Imperfectly Perfect Moments

    Imperfectly Perfect Moments

At home newborn photography, Devon & Cornwall.

Bringing your baby home is so exciting, especially when you have a little one dying to meet their little brother—such a special moment in time. The photographs below are full of life and love, but you may not realise that Lauren was worried about how 2-year-old Zak would behave during the at home newborn photography session. Not to mention a very tired Mum & Dad and all the other things you can expect when bringing your baby home for the first time – feeding and changing and feeding again, it’s all out of your control. These are things that A lot of my families worry about. But let me put your mind to rest and tell you that I love to capture families naturally. I don’t want to create perfectly posed images. I want to create images full of warmth, intimacy and honesty. And this sweet newborn session was just that, full of love and laughter and newborn snuggles—my perfect.

If you’re interested in documenting your days exactly as they are right now, please pop me a message; I’d love to hear from you.

Home newborn photography | At home is where your story begins

I never tire of my home newborn photography sessions. There is something just so special about capturing this time for new parents. I think it’s because I know how fleeting this stage really is.

It won’t be long, and these parents will be looking back in awe of how tiny their baby used to be. There is so much going on in these early days. The excitement of bringing your baby home for the first time, snuggling them in bed, the tiny white vests in the laundry pile. The night feeds, your morning coffee with a side order of cuddles.

Your story begins at home; it’s the place where it’s all happening, where you become parents, where you fall deeper in love with this tiny miracle you’ve created. It’s only right that it’s the setting for your home newborn photography.

Here is baby Leo at almost two weeks old at home with his parents.

Book your home newborn photography shoot

There are so many benefits to home newborn photography. Home is where you are most relaxed and have all the things that you need. There’s no packing up everything but the kitchen sink and being stressed to get to location on time for a session. No having to work around the baby as it’s in its own environment. It’s warm and cosy.

In this day and age there is a big chance you won’t be living in the place you had your baby in the future. So there is something super nostalgic about looking back at your family pictures in your first family home. These are your opportunities to document your life. To look back on how far you have come and how much your babies have grown.

I absolutely love my beach sessions but home newborn photography has such a big place in my heart for these reasons and so many more.

If you are expecting a lovely little bundle then please do get in touch to book your newborn session with me. By the way, I do maternity too!

There are a lot of rules in photography. Right ways of doing things, technical stuff, you know? There are a lot of rules in posed newborn photography too.  I used to worry a lot about the rules.  I was always seeking perfection: many, many hours spent in the studio meticulously posing and styling. Until one day, I just stopped, I looked at this tiny baby on a grey blanket in front of me, and I thought, “what am I doing?”. This isn’t the way I want to photograph a new life. I want to capture real moments that tell a story of who they are right now. Moments that mean something.

I call it natural newborn photography. Embracing the reality of those first hazy weeks of life with your new baby. Focusing on the moments that really matter.  The moments that tell the story of when you welcome your baby into your world. What that looks like and, most importantly, what it feels like.

The best thing is there is no studio. I’ll come to you and document your life, the big details and the little ones too.

If you are expecting a baby and would like to chat about booking a natural newborn session, I’d love to hear from you. You can contact me at hello@melaniegrace.co.uk.

Laura – Motherhood in my Words

Boho newborn photography Devon & Cornwall

I met Laura in her first few days of motherhood after welcoming beautiful baby Poppy. The shoot took place at her home, which is a total boho dream house. We spent the morning talking about pregnancy and birth (the stuff no one tells you!) and adjusting to life with a newborn. Laura opened up to me that she never thought motherhood was on the cards for her due to having polycystic ovary syndrome. This made the session feel all the more special. I was so grateful to be there, a small part of Laura and partner Chris’ journey to welcoming their beautiful miracle daughter and documenting their first few days together.

Read on for a Motherhood in Laura’s words.

Motherhood, in my words: Being a mum has completely changed my mental health. I’ve suffered from depression for years, but I actually began to feel myself getting better throughout my pregnancy. It forced me to focus on the here and now and be healthy, both physically and mentally.

Now that she’s here, I only think of the future; I’m not looking back anymore. I feel the happiness and contentment that had been missing for years.  I’ve got PCOS, endometriosis and had a fallopian tube removed 10 years ago because of a tumour, so I never thought I’d be able to conceive naturally. Thankfully during a holiday, the stars aligned for us, and we were surprised to find out that I had fallen pregnant. ( months later, we welcomed our daughter Poppy into the world.  She really is a gift, and I know how lucky I am to have her.

The best advice I have is to relax and not stress the little things. I’ve been really laid back, and even when she’s screaming in the middle of the night!!! I know it won’t last forever, and somehow, I keep calm. I think having patience is the key. I’d also really recommend doing an NCT course. Ours was great, mostly because of the lovely expecting parents we met.  The support we new mums are giving each other is amazing,  we’re all going through the same thing simultaneously, and that’s a great reassurance.

    Breastfeeding Photographer Devon & Cornwall

It’s incredibly special to help document Steffi’s breastfeeding journey with her daughter Grace as she deeply regretted not having photographs of herself feeding her firstborn. If you choose to (or can) breastfeed your baby, it becomes such a huge part of your motherhood story. It’s a journey. Sometimes an exhausting, emotional, painful one. However, it’s also an extraordinary, powerful and connected experience. One that is so fleeting. I love to capture it for my families, as I know that these images are some of the ones that will become the most treasured.

Newborn Photographer Cornwall | My Motherhood Story

When Melanie asked me about my motherhood story and what it means to me, my initial thoughts on answering this was simple. It means Everything. I’m probably going to be throwing out all the cliches in this piece, but I guess they are cliche for a reason because they are true, and they are relevant. Being a mother is my calling in life; it’s what I feel I was destined to be, and as soon as I became one, I felt complete. Everything just fell into place! I’m going to tell you a bit about my journey into motherhood so that it gives you an insight into why it’s so important to me.

When I was 15, I nearly died from anorexia. My doctors told me the chances of me having children were next to nothing. I then developed endometriosis and polycystic ovaries, which also contributed to my struggle to conceive. However, I met my extremely understanding husband, but we knew we wanted to start a family together. Surprisingly I did fall pregnant, but we sadly lost this baby; we then suffered a further 3 years of pain, heartbreak and lost hope. Eventually, I had an operation to treat my endometriosis and was told it would take 6 months for my body to regulate and then start trying; a month after the operation, I was pregnant with our beautiful daughter Bella!

Family with newborn baby in bed

Since then, we have also welcomed a gorgeous baby boy. Bella is now 2, and Jack is 4 months! They are my miracle rainbow babies. For me, nothing in this whole world compares to the feeling of growing life, giving birth and holding that tiny precious being in my arms, knowing I created it with the man I love. Something I never actually thought I would get the chance to experience. I knew at that moment, as soon as my first child was born, life would never be the same. As I had chosen to have children, and therefore, I knew that I would never again put myself first; their needs, their happiness would always come before mine.

Motherhood can be quite overwhelming at times. Knowing that these tiny humans, which are so so precious, are completely reliant on me! It can be daunting, questioning myself all the time, am I doing it right, is this the best way, should I do this or that. But then I look at my beautiful children, healthy and most importantly happy, and I know I’m doing just fine – I couldn’t be more proud.

Going into motherhood, I have learnt so many new life skills. One of which is surviving on little to no sleep, the word “mombie” is how I would best describe myself most days with 2 under 2! I think that’s what I have found most challenging. Going from one to 2 is a whole new ball game. Having to function day to day being sleep deprived is not easy! Days tend to blur into each other, a routine of nappy changing, bottle sterilising, Peppa pig and of course, laundry!

    There
is no perfect mother like there is no perfect child. But I know that we are perfect for each other in my family. I love them more than anything in the whole world. I will never take them for granted, and I will treasure every single moment with them.
