Top Tips for At Home Sessions | Portrait Photographer Cornwall

Considering an at home photoshoot? Here are 4 top tips for when you inevitably say, “Arghh, but my house is a mess!”.

There’s always something extra lovely about being asked to do an at home shoot. To be invited into your home and into your family for that period of time. As a portrait photographer, Cornwall & Devon based, I always learn so much about my local families from being in their home. Our house is such an extension of our personality as well as being the place you feel the most comfortable and at ease.

I know that booking an at home shoot can bring a few worries and anxieties, especially around how your home will look on camera. I promise you don’t have to start a huge decluttering project or get the paintbrushes out. The session will be relaxed and laid back, and I want that to include the days leading up to it! So here are a few quick and easy tips to make your home photo-ready with no stress.

    1 – Greenery

I love seeing plants and flowers dotted around a home, they make wonderful little pockets of colour which always looks fantastic in photos.

Now, don’t worry, there’s no need to go mad, you definitely don’t need to turn your living room into a jungle! All you need are a few plants in pots, a pretty bouquet of flowers or even some dried stems. I’ve jumped onto the pampas trend so I’d always recommend some pampas grass, it’s so simple to arrange but so effective!

    2 – Wall Art

Keeping to the colour theme I love it when homes have paintings, prints, wall hangings, or bold wallpaper adorning their walls. It adds so much personality and colour to your home and I always enjoy seeing how your choice of art is linked to your family’s personality.

Please don’t feel like you have to go out and purchase any new prints or paintings for your photoshoot. It’s just something to think about and don’t be surprised if I ask you if I can see your wall art when I arrive! Although if you’ve been putting off getting any pictures up on your wall then now is the perfect excuse!

    3 – Bed Linen

I love love LOVE bed linen! Especially for photoshoots with babies and young children. Simple, plain, or coloured bed linen is just the best. Try and avoid zany patterns if you can, it can distract slightly from the focus of the photo – you and your family!

Bed linen makes for a lovely natural texture and backdrop to your photos. I can lay your baby down on it, get you all to snuggle up together on the bed, or even get your energetic little ones having a bit of a jump around (with your permission of course!)

A bonus tip is to try and choose clothes that complement the colours of your home. I’m always asked what people should wear on a shoot and the simplest answer is always to choose clothes you love and feel comfortable in, that complement the tones you’ll have around you on the shoot and to avoid bright colours, lots of patterns and logos.

    4 – Junk Room

I’m definitely not expecting your home to look showhome perfect. I am a Mum myself and understand that time is precious and having a tidy home can be nothing short of miraculous. This is where the junk room comes in! Have a Monica from Friends moment and stick everything you don’t want on show into a room or cupboard. Deal with it another time (or never). I won’t look and I certainly won’t judge you!

So there you have it, my four simple tips to prepare your home from a photo shoot. The main things that I always stress to couples are that you should feel comfortable and relaxed, your home – or the rooms we are using on the shoot – should reflect you and I promise I’m not coming in with high expectations or expecting the perfect home. I know what life is like as a parent. I’ll be looking for light, interesting features and focusing on the love between you all.

Family Photographer Devon | Dreamy Wild Horses session

Ah September sessions, I love those first signs of autumn. The subtly changing colours and the bite in the air. Signs of cosy blanketed evenings and early Sunsets. Perfect for getting in a photoshoot before bedtime!

This shoot with Blanche, Dean and Otto was beyond magical. As far as a family photographer Devon based goes, this was a true dream. What more could I need than a sunset on Dartmoor, stunning light, wild ponies and a beautiful family?!

I find it incredible by the way that Ponies have lived on Dartmoor since prehistoric times. In spite of this they actually have owners and are rounded up once a year. A little local fact for you.

    Continuing your story

This was the second time that I’ve shot Blanche and Otto, as I photographed Otto as a baby during one of my first sessions after I moved back to Cornwall. So lovely to look back on and two years on and It gave me all the feels to see how much he’d grown. Times flies and I know that Blanche is so glad to have these photographs to serve as special memories.

Recording your family laughing and loving in the moment is something I am passionate about. It makes my heart flutter capturing those candid interactions and moments that make up your family’s stories. I especially love when you share your creative vision with me for your photographs.

Your session is yours. When you book with me, we’ll chat about your vision. This is your opportunity to create that moment you’ve dreamed about. Maybe it’s a barefoot and wild session on the beach and waist deep in the sea. Perhaps ethereal pregnancy dreams and a lazy morning cuddled up in bed with your babies. Or even, like Blanche, Dean and Otto – a sunset and wild horses.

Cornwall Family Photographer beach sunset photo shoot

I’ve got such a special family session to share with you all today. I first met this wonderful family nearly 7 years ago. Layla was newborn, tiny, and scrunched up with an absolutely besotted Kelly and Eddie unable to take their eyes off her. I had some wonderful cuddles that day and loved getting to know the family.

Fast forward to 2021 and I was over the moon when they got in touch to say that they would be on holiday in Cornwall and thought it was time for some new family photographs. Little Layla is six years old now and I was so looking forward to seeing her again and hearing how they’ve all been over the years.

Sennen Cove – Cornwall Family Photographer

Wild, grassy dunes, beautiful blue waters, and miles of golden sand. Sennen Cove Beach is a fantastic spot for family photographs, especially at sunset which is when we decided to meet up. I always try to schedule outdoor family sessions for sunrise or sunset. There’s nothing quite like the stunning golden light you get as the day is dawning or the sun is setting.

It’s always an honour when a family returns to you over the years for more sessions. I love seeing how much everyone has grown and changed over the years, catching up on all their news, and meeting any new additions – furbabies or human babies! In this case, it was Benson the adorable beagle who joined us for the session.

    Family Photos include your furbabies!

As soon as I met up with Kelly, Eddie, Layla, and Benson I knew we were going to have a great evening. It was just like meeting up with old friends. We chattered and laughed together as we made our way down the hill to the cove. The warm vibe between us all set the tone for the photography session. With a breathtaking sunset as our backdrop, we strolled along the beach, paddled in the surf, and even spotted some dolphins. It was magical! Layla enjoyed lots of snuggles with her parents as well as insisting on having a piggyback along the sand. Eddie couldn’t say no! Not to be left out Benson posed happily for a few pictures before having a good old sniff around the dunes whilst I photographed Kelly, Eddie and Layla. I’m pretty sure he could smell the rabbits that regularly play there!

I absolutely adore being a Cornwall family photographer, there’s no place on earth quite like a Cornish beach and I find that families just can’t help but be in the moment and enjoy themselves together there – whether they’re on holiday or they’re on a beach that they’ve spent their lives enjoying!

My family lifestyle sessions are always best when families forget they’re being photographed and embrace every minute of being together. When you make the most of the beautiful surroundings and have fun. Just as Eddie, Kelly, and Layla did. I promise that if you engage with your family, run, laugh, be silly and snuggle up then your photographs will be ones that you will treasure forever. My heart sings whenever I put together a gallery and the love you all have for each other just shines out of it!

If you’d like to book a family shoot then I’d love to hear from you. The best part of being a Cornwall family photographer is that I get to explore your favourite spots with you!
