Are you forever missing out on being included in the family photos?

You deserve more than family selfies. Let me show you and your loves from my point of view.

You are unique; there is no one else just like you. I firmly believe that you deserve to take up space in this big wide world; honestly, regardless of how you look or feel, your love is always worth capturing. I’d hate for you to look back and not have any photographs of yourself with your babies.

    Get in your family photos!

I have been there with the post-baby body, and believe me when I say your body is incredible for what it just did! No one expects you to “bounce back” our bodies change and evolve. You are amazing just the way you are. You owe it to yourself and your kids for them to have photographs of you. Most people, at some point, don’t like themselves in pictures. But I promise one day you’ll look back with kinder eyes and realise your beauty. I promise.

Not liking yourself in pictures might not be the issue here; like Louise, you might always be the photographer and never in the photo. I know I’m always the one with my camera out in my family.

In years to come if someone looked back at my family they’d be forgiven for thinking my husband was a single Dad If someone looked back at my family in years to come, they would likely think my husband was a single Dad to three with a dog and was just so lucky to have his own personal photographer following him around! I know I need to get in the photographs more myself and make a point of doing it when I can, but I’m so happy to provide this service for you.

I think my message is starting to ring loud and clear here. Get in your family photos!

Five reasons for a sunset photoshoot

Hold tight for reasons for a sunset photoshoot and why it may be the best option for your session.
Ask almost any photographer, and they’ll tell you that their favourite time to shoot is at sunset. There are so many reasons why this is the best time to get your family photos, but I’m not going to make you take my word for it.
Scroll halfway through these photos (that, to be honest, speak for themselves) on why you will not regret trusting me on a sunset shoot.

    Reasons for a sunset photoshoot

    1. As the sun sinks lower in the sky late afternoon or early evening, we arrive at a beautiful time of the day just before the sunset. The particles in the atmosphere diffuse the light beautifully, and you will be bathed in gorgeous soft light and dramatic long shadows, perfect for portraits and known in the business as “Golden Hour”.
    2. In addition, at the end of your session, hopefully, we’ll see some beautifully orange-red skies and finish off with a stunning sunset. What could be a more perfect backdrop for your session?
    3. We can shoot anytime of the year and we get the opportunity for some beautiful lights as long as we start 90 mins before sunset.
    4. This could be as late as 8 pm in the summer months, so we have plenty of time to get situated, and we won’t miss that dreamy good light.
    5. In spring and autumn, it’s much earlier. Autumn sun is magical, pinks, reds, oranges. So If your children struggle to stay up late, booking an autumn session might be the best fit for you. Shoot and then home for bed.

    Finally

An evening on the beach has a truly magical feel. It’s quiet and peaceful and much more private. It’s my happy place, and I know it will quickly become yours!

If with all these things you’re thinking, “Mel, I want a Summer shoot, but my kids will get to bed after their bedtime!”
As a Mother, I hear you; throwing out the routine might be scary. But listen. I promise you that one night won’t hurt. It will be a wonderful, lasting memory for you and your kids, and it is so worth it.

    You won’t regret it!

Family Photos | Game of Thrones filming

It’s not every day I turn up to work to find myself shooting a family just up the beach from a major production company working their magic.  It just to happened that we had booked our session the same day that the Game of Thrones filming was happening.

Cast and crew descended on Holywell Bay near Newquay to film new scenes for House of the Dragon alongside little old me and this gorgeous little family.

So if you’re watching Game of Thrones House of Dragons, look closely and you might see me doing my thing in the distance!

    Confession…

I have never seen so many trucks in the car park at Holywell beach. There were Loads of security everywhere. A track all the way down the beach where there were tents pitched.

Buggies bringing crew and actors to and from the car park. Dressing rooms. A tractor and even an Ambulance. I’m not sure if this helps to know which bit was being filmed but there were campfires made on the beach and groups of warriors and wood on the beach that looked like some sort of boat wreckage.

We didn’t catch a glimpse of Matt Smith but this is my new claim to fame at least. I have to be honest though – confession time – I haven’t watched Game of Thrones at all. Don’t shoot me.

    A little extra magic

I have to thank Game of Thrones though for the pyrotechnics involved as part of their shoot as down the right side of the beach there were boats creating smoke. This fake mist made for some gorgeous atmospheric shots of the sea in the background.

The moral of the story is, there’s never a dull day in this job and I’m so grateful for it. We still managed to get beautiful images of this gorgeous family. In spite of the total pandemonium that was going on in the background.

This little family was just such a joy to shoot. So relaxed and kind. Sessions like this make my heart happy.

I can’t promise Game of Thrones for you for your shoot, but I can guarantee you will have a great shoot. Book now

  • Styling Tips for Boho Family Photos

Styling Tips for Boho Family Photos

    Cornwall Family Photographer

Hey! Upon reading this journal post you may be surprised that I talk about boho family Photos and also manage to drop in a quote from a famous Christmas flick. Hear me out!

If you’ve seen the movie “The Grinch” you’ll know that wardrobe choice can feel pretty overwhelming. “But what would I wear?!” He exclaims. After a montage of him trying on different outfits he decides; “This is ridiculous, If I can’t find something nice to wear I’m not going!”

I think we can all identify with old Grinch here. It can feel overwhelming not only deciding what you should wear yourself. But also dressing your family.

Luckily, I’m here on hand to help. I adore helping you to make your family look as cute as possibly for these important heirloom images that you will look back on for years to come.

    Take inspiration from surrounding

For me, the Mason family absolutely nailed it here.  The muted tones and mix of textures feel so harmonious with location. Holywell Bay is one of my favourite places to shoot and the colours are so beautiful. I find it is advantageous to work with the tones of the location we shoot in. This means that you are the stars of the show in your album and your wardrobe just enhances you.

I will guide you through the process, on booking you will receive a questionnaire and a guide, we will chat about this in our web chat.

It’s not surprise that I like earthy, muted colours and boho vibes. If we are going through print it’s always good to pepper the rest of the outfits with block colours. It’s sometimes good to pick a few colours and find hues and variations of these. If this makes you nervous you can run your ideas past me and I’m happy to give you tips on what photographs well.

I can’t wait to get started on your journey and I look forward to photographing you and your beautiful family.

  • Chasing sunsets with you

    Chasing sunsets with you

Cornwall family photos – Tips for sunset family photos

I get it; there’s so much to think about when you’re considering a family session. The most important thing is that you just let go and enjoy the process with the people you love. All I want is for you to feel comfortable and content. Here are some things to think about to help you have the best time possible.

    Golden hour magic

A couple of hours before sunset or sunrise is my most favourite time of day for family photos; when the sun is low, and the light is warm, it creates a beautiful softness in your images that’s just magical. This can be challenging for younger children, but I recommend you go with it and adjust naps and bedtimes for that day to allow for a later night. It’s also worth considering the time of the year when booking a family session, and you may want to avoid a session in the summer and opt for Spring or Autumn instead when the sun sets earlier in the day.

    Connection always

This is where the magic happens, you just being you and loving on your family. Holding hands, stroking your little one’s cheek, nose rubs and playing with hair, it’s these little moments of connections that makes the photos. So always be touching your loves. The result will be photos rich in love and connections and will give you all the feels. Trust me!

Taking the stress out of what to wear.

Please don’t over-think this. Plan what you’re going to wear in advance; you don’t want to be rushing around on the session’s day. We want the experience to be easy breezy, right?

I always suggest sticking to neutrals and simple, relaxed styles that work with the shooting environment. I will also help you plan your outfits and look through my client wardrobe during your session’s planning stages.

    Collaboration

The best sessions are a collaboration of ideas between you and me. What makes you guys you? I want to know. Come at me with your ideas, and let’s get planning for a beautifully unique experience.

    Let go and enjoy!

Please don’t worry about a thing; even if the kids are running wild, trust the process. When you let go and enjoy just being together, true magic happens.

There’s never a “perfect” time to book your Cornwall family photos, but the best time is right now because life is happening right now.

  • Spring Sunsets

    Spring Sunsets

Salcombe Family Photographer | Beach family session Devon.

One of my favourite things about lifestyle photography is exploring so many different parts of Devon & Cornwall. This is the Greenhill family on their first family holiday in Salcombe, Devon. I met them on a beautiful spring evening at their gorgeous air B&B, a short walk from the harbour. We crossed the river on a taxi boat and wandered a little further afield to find this beautiful hidden gem of a beach to watch the sunset. Bliss.

Discovering new places to shoot is so exciting. I’m always open to trying somewhere different, especially when it’s full of meaning for you and your family. It’s one of the things we’ll start chatting about as soon as you book your session with me. We’ll work together to figure out the best spot for you. This could be at home with cuddles and story time on the bed or out in the open, dancing in the sea and discovering new places.

Remember your session is all yours, so get in touch with all your location dreams; I’m looking forward to hearing them. Connect here.

  • Love & Magic

    Love & Magic

Wembury Beach Shoot Devon. A magical evening with Hannah and her girls.

The beach is such a wonderful setting for a Motherhood or Family photography session. There’s something so magical about the golden evening light, the salty breeze and the sound of the waves. This session with Hannah and her girls was just perfect, the setting, the outfits, the light but most importantly, the love. I could not have asked for more.

Hannah, like many of us, feels more comfortable behind the camera than in front of it. So she has few photographs of herself with her children that she loves. I couldn’t wait to help her rectify this by getting her in front of my lens and do what I love to do. Capture all those tiny moments of connection that make you really FEEL. Holding their little hands, arms reaching out and holding tightly onto you, the snuggles and the nose kisses. All these beautiful moments of love and magic captured forever.
